Across the fields

5 May 2007

A view of the power station across fields to the west of Didcot. This view has already changed significantly, with the construction of the new Great Western Park housing estate.

Renowned architect Sir Frederick Gibberd was chosen to design the power station. He produced a layout with two separate groups of cooling towers in an attempt to reduce its impact on the landscape.

Sir Frederick Gibberd is also known for designing the Roman Catholic Cathedral in Liverpool. Coincidentally, the architect of Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral, Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, also designed power stations, in London at Battersea and Bankside (the latter now the Tate Modern gallery).
