Liuhe Pagoda

Liuhe Pagoda

20 July 2009

The Liuhe or Six Harmonies Pagoda (六和塔) is located near the Qiantang River. Its name refers to six Buddhist ordinances. It was originally constructed during the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127 AD) but was later destroyed and rebuilt by 1165. It has seen significant restoration in the 20th century (see how it looked circa 1891!) Constructed largely from wood, the pagoda is 60 metres high and also stands on a hill, so is a good vantage point for viewing the river and city. At the top, visitors are sternly warned by signs, "No throws the thing".
