Work is currently underway at CERN to build the new Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the famous tunnels 100 metres underground. This is the top of the shaft into which the CMS detector will be lowered when its construction is completed. As the tunnels were a building site, and therefore out of bounds, this was the closest to them that I was able to go :-(
(Unfortunately, this was the last picture of a film, and so the right-hand side of the frame is missing!)
