Hello Jonathan,
I enjoyed your site very much. I found it via Google Images as I was looking for pictures of home (Liverpool) because I get homesick every now and then! How sad eh! Anyway, I thought the pictures were really good and I enjoyed studying them in detail and putting names to streets and buildings.
On a more serious note however, I cannot agree with your assessment of the Lord of the Rings movie, I thought it mirrored the book to a ‘T’. Not many movies can say that!
Enough already!!
Cheers
Jim

In 1961 I went through Milano Centrale as a 5 year old for the first time, I was awestruck. Mussolini didn’t get things entirely wrong. I took a day out from skiing last year to pay it a visit and it didn’t disappoint, rivals any cathedral. The majesty and intrigue of the place are amazing. Strangely enough I took some photos and one was the Geneva bound Cisalpino. I plan to take my kids there over the Christmas holidays. Fantastic site, well done

Firstly, it’s not strictly a comment about your site, but you may have guessed that.
My twin brother is called Jonathan, so imagine my surprise and confusion when I found a website using his name, and displaying photographs. Jon is a professional photographer! I had no idea there were two Jon Rawles, but now I know…
Just thought I’d say “Hi” really, from one Rawle to another, as there are few enough of us!

Nice site - but I must correct your assertion that the metropolitan counties reflect the identities of people in those areas. “Greater Manchester” is widely resented in the north of the area, which has always identified very strongly with Lancashire. In fact, if you think about it, most people’s idea of Lancashire is based on these towns, rather than the 1974 “rump” county! And they are not a fringe area - the population of Bolton and Wigan alone is nearly half as big again as that of the City of Manchester. Add Bury, Rochdale and Oldham, and we dwarf it. Moreover, the urban belt continues westwards through St Helens, Warrington and Widnes to Liverpool.
The 1974 “reform” split up south Lancashire and the West Riding of Yorkshire quite artificially. In what was south Lancashire, we now have three “strategic” areas (Merseyside, Cheshire and Greater Manchester) where previously there was one. This has caused a plethora of disjointed thinking: transport is less integrated than forty years ago, and we usually get at least a double helping of quangos and similar bureaucracies.
The “city region” model forces an ill-fitting straitjacket on northern England - where urbanization has historically been more diffuse. Bolton and Sunderland did not come into existence because of suburban expansion by Manchester and Newcastle - they were there at the outset, developing as industrial and social entities in their own right. The refusal to acknowledge this has tended to exaggerate the significance of what are termed the “core cities” as if they were little Londons, at the expense of other urban centres. This may not bother dormitory Cheshire or Warwickshire, but is the kiss of death to the Lancashire towns and the Black Country. No provincial city (despite Mancunian hype!)has ever matched London in its domination of a region.

Your explanation of how to calculate the day of the week for any date in the Gregorian calendar is just what I was looking for to help me write a calendar program for my Java programming class. Thanks much for a clear and concise explanation and the sample was really helpful too. Cheers!
