Thermae Bath Spa
Bath
11 November 2006
Despite being famous as a spa town, the last puclic pool in Bath closed in 1978. Plans for a new spa were given the go-ahead as a millennium project, with the intention that a new spa would open in 2002. However, the project was delayed by one setback after another, from vandals breaking the plate glass windows, to paint in the steam rooms that kept peeling off. The Three Tenors held a concert that was supposed to mark the opening of the Spa in 2003, but still it remained closed. The building finally opened as "Thermae Bath Spa" in August 2006.
The building was designed by Nicholas Grimshaw, and while a modern structure, is in sympathy with the surrounding Georgian stone buildings. The roof features an open air swimming pool and terrace.
