King's College

King's College was founded in 1441 by King Henry VI. The neo-gothic Gatehouse (seen here) was built in the 1820s by architect William Wilkins to match the genuinely gothic chapel that stands next to it.
King's was one of the first Cambridge colleges to start charging an entrance fee for visitors. The public must use a side entrance, and staff in purple robes guard the gates to ensure no-one sneaks in without paying.
