Trinity College Great Gate

23 September 2006

Trinity College was founded by King Henry VIII in 1546. A statue of the founder can be seen above the Great Gate. In his right hand, the king holds a chair-leg in place of a sword – maybe switched as an early form of student prank?

Cambridge University’s first astronomical observatory was built on top of the gatehouse in 1704.
