The Bund

The Bund

25 July 2009

A view of the Bund, Shanghai's historic waterfront along the Huangpu River, from the 88th floor of the Jin Mao Tower. The buildings were all built in the early 20th century for merchants and banks. The domed building near the centre is the HSBC Building, and in common with the bank's present headquarters in Hong Kong and London has a pair of bronze lions, "Stephen and Stitt", guarding the entrance.

At the time this photo was taken, the Bund was undergoing major renovation works in time for Expo 2010 and so the waterfront was inaccessible, meaning the only view of the buildings was from vantage points on the opposite bank.

Wikipedia has a nice illustration showing each of the buildings on the Bund and who they were built for.
