Witley Court

Witley Court

Witley Court was once one of the finest country houses in England. In 1937, it was destroyed by fire and abandoned. The house is now owned by English Heritage, and is open to visitors.

The house is surrounded by nineteenth-century formal gardens which are in the process of being restored. The centrepiece of these is the Perseus and Andromeda fountain, which can be seen in the foreground of the photograph. This was recently returned to its former glory and once again sends jets of water more than 35 metres into the air.

In the grounds, there is extensive woodland, complete with a lake. There is a fine parish church next to the house - its tower and roof can be seen above the house to the right of the picture.
